Vocal Tip # 3 - Warm up please !

Warming up is very critical to a great performance. You must warm up your muscles. Singers are very much like athletes. Like an Athlete, always make sure you are properly warmed up and prepared both mentally and physically before you begin to sing. If you were to run a hundred metres without warming up, you would probably pull a muscle. Same with singing. Gently, warm up your voice and think positive thoughts before you begin.

A rule of thumb is to do at least 20 minutes of vocal exercises. If you perform a lot, it could take less time. If you perform infrequently, warm up longer. Otherwise you warm up on your audience or, worse, you find congestion, range weakness or other problems on stage rather than in the privacy of your home -- where you can work to overcome them.

You go to hit a note… and a different one comes out! Your delicate little vocal folds were not made to go from 0 to 60 in three seconds. You must stretch them to their full range gently and gradually!

Visit us again! Next time you'll get some tips on good warm up routines!

Vocal Tip # 2 - Throat clearing is harmful?

When you clear your throat you ‘scrape’ the mucous off the mucous membranes of the vocal cords. It is not damaging to clear your throat. It can be a function of vital importance if mucous is entering the windpipe, but it might irritate the mucous membrane if you do it too often and too vigorously.
  • Instead of clearing your throat to clear mucous let it remain there until it has covered the dry spots on the membrane. Go ahead and use your voice and disregard the woolly sound. Start by humming or speaking, carefully at first, and soon the rapid vibrations of the vocal cords will shake loose the excess mucous.
  • There is another safe way of making excess mucous disappear. Closing your mouth, and the nasal passage (or block the nose) and at the same time suck inwards and swallow. This creates a partial vacuum that sucks the excess mucous off the vocal cords
  • Take a sip of water (not too cold nor too hot)
  • A very gentle clearing (almost unvoiced)

Vocal Tip #1 - Drink lots of Water

Your voice is an instrument that must last you a lifetime. It needs care! The smallest irritation and swelling of the surface of the vocal chords can cause the sound produced to change.

Drinking lots of H2O is one of the most important vocal tips. Your vocal cords need to be hydrated. The vocal folds are one of the last tissues in your body to become fully hydrated. Drink at least 6 - 8 glasses of water per day and you will experience a tremendous difference vocally.
